Jefferson City man charged after disturbance at hospital

A Jefferson City man has been charged after a disturbance at a local hospital Monday night.

Carl Cottrell, 50, is charged with three counts of second-degree assault.

Officers were called to Capital Region Hospital after Cottrell got into an argument with a family member while visiting on the third floor of the hospital, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

Hospital security intervened, but Cottrell pulled a knife from his pocket and began to cut at his throat, police reported. He then allegedly walked toward hospital staff with the knife pointed at them and began threatening them and poking the knife blade toward them.

Cottrell reportedly ran through the hallways of the third floor with the knife, threatening visitors and staff.

When officers caught up with Cottrell, they ordered him to the ground. At that time, Cottrell reportedly was yelling at nurses and bleeding from his neck.

Authorities believed Cottrell was under the influence of a narcotic at the time of this incident.

After being examined for injuries, Cottrell denied he had threatened anyone.
