Missouri State Penitentiary tour suspension extended

The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau has suspended Missouri State Penitentiary tours through Sept. 30.

Tours previously had been suspended through Aug. 31 due to damage from the May 22 tornado.

"We are trying to stay optimistic with what the end of our tour season will look like," said Brittney Mormann, CVB communications and film manager, "which is why we are pushing tours on a month-by-month basis."

Those interested in scheduling a tour of the historic MSP property should watch the CVB's website, MissouriPenTours.com. People with previously scheduled tours will be contacted for a refund, according to the website.

The CVB offers ghost tours, history tours and photography options among other tour packages at the historic property.

It may cost $9.4 million to repair the Missouri State Penitentiary following the tornado, Brittany Ruess, Missouri Office of Administration director of communications, previously told the News Tribune.
