Stratman, Helton to compete for Maries County presiding commissioner

Victor Stratman and Vernon "Sonny" Helton will face off for the Maries County presiding commissioner position in November.

Stratman defeated opponent David "Hutch" Hutchinson with 1,138 votes (63.75 percent) in Tuesday's Republican presiding commission race. Hutchinson received 523 votes (29.30 percent).

Helton defeated opponent Nancy Ragan in the Democratic presiding commissioner race by a slim margin - 366 votes (48.74 percent) over 331 votes (44.07 percent).

Maries County voters will decide who will take over the presiding commissioner position in the Nov. 6 general election.

Richard "Tony" Skouby will be Maries County's new prosecuting attorney, defeating Carrie Gerischer with 1,031 votes (57.76 percent) in the Republican race. Gerischer received 562 votes (31.48 percent).

Skouby will replace Prosecuting Attorney Terry Schwartze, who plans to retire at the end of the year, according to the Maries County Advocate. No candidates ran for the prosecuting attorney on the Democrat ballot.

Incumbent Mark Buschmann won 601 votes (80.03 percent) in the Democrat circuit court clerk and ex-officio recorder of deeds race, defeating opponent Mickey Jones, who received 98 votes( 13.05 percent). No one filed to run for circuit court clerk on the Republican ballot.

Bushmann has served as the Maries County circuit clerk and recorder for 11 years, according to reporting by the Maries County Advocate.
