Fog creates a prism for light

About five days of dense fog were expected to conclude today.

Staff photographer Julie Smith took a few minutes each of the past couple days to capture some images that developed during the fog.

National Weather Service meteorologist Lydia Jaja, who is based in St. Louis, said there is a very simple explanation for the fog.

"We've gotten fog because the ground is very, very cool," Jaja said. "That's from the very cold air we've had. Warm moist air has moved over that. That's caused the fog."

It's not uncommon to have fog this time of year, she added.

Jaja reminds drivers to use low beams when driving in fog, and to slow down.

"We would think it's common sense," she added.
