Prep Baseball: Capital City 6, Sedalia Smith-Cotton 5

SEDALIA -- The Capital City Cavaliers jumped ahead early and held off the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers for a 6-5 Central Missouri Activities Conference baseball win Wednesday in Sedalia.

The Cavaliers scored two runs in the second inning and four in the third to jump ahead 6-0, then the Tigers scored five unanswered runs, including one in the seventh.

Capital City got on the board first when Zach Brown reached base on an error then Logan Meers singled to center to put runners on first and second.

Luke Skinner walked to load the bases and Brock Miles singled to right for two RBI.

In the third, Chase Stieferman walked, Blake Holtmeyer singled and Brown singled to center to load the bases.

With two outs, Skinner doubled to left to clear the bases, then scored on a Noah Nicklas single to center to put the Cavaliers up 6-0.

Sedalia then scored three in the bottom of the third, one in the fifth and its final run in the seventh, but Kaiden Menning was able to get a flyout with a runner on second to end the threat.

Miles pitched the first 6⅔ innings to earn the win for the Cavaliers, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks, while striking out nine. 

Menning got the flyout against the only batter he faced for a save.

Miles had two hits, a walk and two RBI to lead the Cavalier offense, while Nicklas had two hits and an RBI.

Stieferman walked twice and scored a run, Brown went 1-for-3 and scored two runs and Skinner had a double and three RBI.

Capital City (13-6, 1-2 CMAC) will face another conference matchup Friday when it hosts Battle at 5:30 p.m.
