Blair Oaks Board of Education reviews advising program, district audit

The Blair Oaks Board of Education heard reports on the college and career advising program as well as its yearly audit.

College and Career Advisor Renee Maples gave a report to the board about her work this year. Maples works two days a week, and her position is paid for by a grant. Maples said her work goes hand in hand with the counseling office, and her day-to-day duties include meeting with students and helping them make big decisions about their future, whether it be a military, college, workforce or technical path.

She can work one-on-one with students and even take them on college visits.

"Whatever path they choose, I'm there to help them do that and find their way," she said.

Maples told the board her involvement would drop to one day per week next year under the grant unless the board makes changes. Her retirement conditions allow her to work up to two days.

Lindsay Graves of Graves and Associates presented the district's audit. The audit showed an "unmodified opinion" which is a desirable result.

Graves noted the district had three months of operating reserves, and Graves recommends four to six months of reserves in case of emergency. The audit described some difficulties reconciling payroll and cash accounting, but the issue was eventually resolved.

The board approved the audit.

During the reports portion of the meeting, Superintendent Mark Harvey suggested the district check with its engineering firm that drainage and sidewalk placement associated with the potential Falcon Lane expansion would not have a negative impact on possible future building expansion.
