Jefferson City police canine dies

Jefferson City K9 officer Drax, a German shepherd that had been in the department since 2019, died Tuesday.

Drax was 4 years old. He died of an undisclosed illness, which he had battled for about two months, according to a police news release.

During his career, he was used in 13 criminal apprehensions. He assisted in securing 20 perimeters. Drax tracked and helped apprehend six fleeing suspects.

He conducted 154 narcotics searches, resulting in seizures of more than 5 cumulative pounds of methamphetamine and $5,755 in drug-related currency. Drax was also responsible for locating smaller amounts of heroin, cocaine and marijuana.

Drax participated in community events, and at home was a beloved pet.
