Jefferson City man faces numerous charges from weekend shooting incident

A Jefferson City man is facing multiple charges following a Sunday evening shooting in Cole County which left him injured.

Forrest Hoppe, 32, is charged with three counts of armed criminal action, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and one count of second-degree domestic assault.

A Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement shows the incident occurred at 5:36 p.m. in the 4000 block of Randall Drive.

Investigators said the victim told them he had been arguing with Hoppe as they were going to the residence where they both lived. The victim said they were arguing about the multiple guns Hoppe reportedly had in the house.

Hoppe allegedly said he didn't need to go to the house and allegedly displayed a pistol at the victim as he was exiting the vehicle the two were in.

The victim claimed Hoppe attempted to draw the pistol but dropped it. When he retrieved it, the victim said he tried to take the gun away and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the gun went off, hitting Hoppe in the upper thigh/groin area.

During his call to 911, Hoppe allegedly admitted he had been drinking and said he had shot himself.

Hoppe was taken to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia for surgery. As of Tuesday afternoon he was listed in fair condition.

Authorities said video from a neighbor's doorbell camera reportedly supports the victim's story.

Deputies noted a similar incident occurred in December with the same victim. In that incident, the victim was able to take a firearm away from Hoppe. He was then taken into custody for a mental evaluation.
