A Jefferson City man has been charged with one count of first-degree assault following a stabbing Monday evening.

Jonathan Stover, 30, is also charged with armed criminal action and resisting arrest.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows the stabbing occurred around 5:20 p.m. in the 100 block of East Ashley Street.

The victim had been stabbed three times in the right foot and authorities said he was able to identify Stover as his assailant.

The victim claimed he was stopped in a nearby alleyway when Stover approached him and accused him of stealing. Stover allegedly began to swing the knife at the victim who went down on the ground and used his feet to defend himself.

After the victim reportedly got up and punched Stover in the jaw, Stover fled the scene on a bicycle, according to the victim.

Officers located Stover on the greenway trail near Ohio Street, but he reportedly fled on foot. Officers, though, were able to catch him and place him under arrest.

While fleeing, Stover dropped a backpack he was carrying. According to investigators, they found a tactical knife inside the bag with a "red substance" on it. The knife was taken to the local hospital the victim was taken to and he allegedly confirmed it was the knife used in the attack.
