Missouri River Relief (MRR) is offering volunteers the chance to help with large-scale cleanup efforts along the Missouri River this month.

The community and equipment-based event will see volunteers cleaning up trash along a 10-mile stretch of the river, with a headquarters for the effort at Wilson's Serenity Point at Noren Access.

The event will be held "rain or shine" on Saturday, Oct. 15, according to MRR. Pre-registered volunteers will begin sign-ins at 8:45 a.m., and then board boats manned by boat captains and Missouri Department of Conservation agents for cleanup efforts at 9 a.m. Participants will then be able to return by boat between 11 a.m.-noon for a free lunch and have the opportunity to enter the Missouri River Relief Trash Contest, where volunteers will pit their finds against one another to see who had the most interesting haul to win numerous prizes. Volunteers ages 5-18 may also receive the Missouri River Explorer badge upon the completion of activity cards available at a booth at the event.

The effort has drawn more than 200 volunteers so far, according to MRR, with 20 spots remaining as of Monday.

Registration is available for individuals, students, families, and civic and corporate teams seeking to take part in the river cleanup event.

MRR is a volunteer and equipment-based group focused on cleanups, education events and stewardship activities to connect people with the Missouri River. It has been hosting cleanups since 2001.
