Jury duty scam is back, sheriff warns

The Cole County Sheriff's Department is receiving complaints, again, of a scam involving people missing court or missing jury duty.

"This is the same scam we had recently," Sheriff John Wheeler said. "The suspects are calling people and identifying themselves as deputies. They are telling the victims that they missed jury duty or missed a court date and now have to pay with money orders or there will be warrants for their arrest. They are identifying themselves as different members from the Cole County Sheriff's Department."

Wheeler said people should not pay this money.

"If in doubt, call our office at 573-634-9160 or look up the number for the court clerk of whatever county the official is representing," he said.

Do not use the number the individuals give you, Wheeler said, adding they sound authentic and are pushy.

"Remember, we will not call you and tell you if you have a warrant. We show up in person and serve it," he said.
