Jefferson City Correctional Center has two housing units on lockdown after a fight involving 25 offenders Tuesday.

Karen Pojmann, communications director for the Missouri Department of Corrections, said a large fight broke out at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday in the JCCC prison yard. JCCC went into lockdown for the rest of the day Tuesday.

The fight, the cause of which is still being investigated, resulted in four offenders and one staff member being treated for injuries outside the prison, and a few more, including another staff member, treated on-site for minor injuries. All have been released from the hospital, and the staff member is back at work, Pojmann said.

Pojmann said the facility-wide lockdown was lifted Wednesday morning, but two housing units remain locked down as an active investigation is under way.

The two units on lockdown housed offenders involved in the fight, Pojmann said, but the prison is still working to determine who all took part and what caused the incident. Known offenders have been sent to disciplinary segregation, Pojmann said.

"There could be other people in the housing units who were peripherally involved, so they're still investigating," she said.

Pojmann said she's unsure how long the lockdown and investigation will take, but operations elsewhere in the prison are back to normal.
