Local faith leaders to host Pentecost celebration

The Christian Ministerial Fellowship will host a two-part Community Pentecost Celebration on June 5.

The fellowship is a group of clergy (from a variety of denominations) who have met monthly to share a meal, learn about efforts in the community, and sponsor one another in church and ministerial callings, said Mark Kiekhaefer, pastor at Living Hope Church. The fellowship meets on the third Thursday of each month. In the past, the group has sponsored community Thanksgiving services, but decided on a joint Pentecost service after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The free all-ages celebration is to begin with a volunteer fair from 5-6 p.m. at Ellis Porter Riverside Park, 1425 Riverside Drive in Jefferson City.

The fair will feature a number of groups looking to increase their volunteer bases, who will have tables set up, so they can answer questions and recruit new volunteers. Expected participants are River City Habitat for Humanity, Common Ground Community Building, Transformational Housing, Jefferson City Room at the Inn, Catholic Charities Afghan Resettlement Program, Missouri Faith Voices and others.

A Pentecost service follows the volunteer fair, from 6-7 p.m., in the amphitheater, and will include singing, prayer and messages about the gift of the Holy Spirit.

"This is the first time for an event like this," Kiekhaefer said. "I'm hopeful Christians from a number of different congregations will come, worship and consider afresh how they can be serving our community in an ongoing fashion."
