Capital City boys, girls claim track sectional team titles

WAYNESVILLE -- The Capital City Cavaliers and Lady Cavaliers each finished first atop the team standings Monday in the Class 5 Sectional 3 meet at Waynesville High School.

The Lady Cavaliers won seven events on their way to 102 points to place first among the 18 schools in the sectional. The Cavaliers had three first-place finishes and tallied 98 points in the standings.

Kiara Strayhorn was a quadruple-winner to lead the Capital City girls, finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles (14.43 seconds), the long jump (18 feet, 1.75 inches) and the high jump (5-7).

Strayhorn’s fourth event, the 4x100-meter relay, clocked a winning time of 49.06 seconds. Tyrica Sterrett, Darlene Cris-Kargbo and Kalie Strayhorn ran the other three legs of the relay.

Sterrett was a triple-winner for Capital City, adding first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash (12.44 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (26.12 seconds).

Capital City’s seventh win on the girls side came from Kennedy Schanuth, who posted a winning throw of 131-7.5 in the javelin.

Shayla Stewart advanced to state in two events for the Lady Cavaliers, placing second in the discus and third in the shot put.

Anastasia Koopman tied for second in the pole vault to round out the state qualifiers for the Capital City girls.

Keion Grieve was a double-winner for the Capital City boys. His first-place time of 1:53.73 in the 800-meter run is the fastest time in the state this season.

Grieve, along with Sincere Davis, Parker Noble and Brock Schofield, won the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 7:58.43.

Capital City’s third boys winner, Connor Hull, clocked a first-place time of 50.10 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

Matthew Boyer was runner-up in both the discus and the javelin, while Sam Albert placed second in the shot put and third in the discus.

The Cavaliers had a pair of second-place relays at sectionals: Cameron Harrison, Hull, TJ Dyer and Emmanuel Borde-Koufie in the 4x200 and Harrison, Hull, Dyer and Grieve in the 4x400.

Dyer added a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and Harrison placed fourth in the 200 to round out the Cavaliers’ state qualifiers.

The top-four finishers from the sectional meet advance to the Class 5 track and field state championships, which are Friday and Saturday at Adkins Stadium.
