Prep Track and Field: Morris leads Calvary Lutheran girls at sectional

ST. LOUIS -- Sydney Morris had a pair of runner-up finishes Saturday in the Class 1 Sectional 1 meet at Lutheran North High School.

Morris took second in the girls shot put and discus, as Calvary Lutheran finished eighth out of 31 schools in the girls team standings with 31 points.

Maddie Homfeldt joined Morris as a state qualifier, finishing in third place in the girls 1,600-meter run.

Jamestown had a pair of sectional individual champions, sweeping the titles in the javelin. James Scheperle won the boys event with a throw of 141 feet, 2.5 inches, while Jolene Sorrells took first for the Lady Eagles with a throw of 112-8.

The Jamestown girls placed second in both the 4x200- and 4x400-meter relays. Emma Baepler also qualified for state with a third-place finish in the girls long jump.

Shayne Harlan placed fourth in the boys 100-meter dash for the Eagles.

St. Elizabeth was led by Sarah Backes, who won the girls high jump as she cleared a height of 5-0.

Audrey Struemph tied for second in the girls pole vault for the Lady Hornets.

The top-four finishers from the sectional meet qualify for the Class 1 track and field state championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Adkins Stadium.
