YMCA to host music festival to raise funds for camps

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to sit on during the Jefferson City Area YMCA Music Festival.

The YMCA's second festival is intended to raise money for summer youth camps.

The event will be 4:30 p.m. at the 63 Sports Complex, on Renz Farm Road. Gates open at 4 p.m. May 21. The event will continue until 9 p.m.

Advance tickets are $25 for ages 16 and older (five tickets are $100), $10 for ages 6-15, no admission charge for ages 5 and younger.

Tickets at the gate are $30 for ages 16 and older, $15 for ages 6-15, and no admission charge for ages 5 and younger.

The Dave Baker Band, Forrest McCurren & the Daily Special, and Jordan Heckemeyer are to provide music. Gerry Tritz MidMoMagicShow, Jim Dyke Caricatures and children's games will be available for entertainment. Food and beverages are to be provided by Pizza Kwik, 2 Odd Dawgs, Rebel Taco, Fechtel/NH Scheppers Products, Bar Vino and Last Flight Brewery.

The local YMCA offers camps for thousands of children. Each year, the YMCA provides camps for about 100 children who require financial assistance in order to attend. Funds raised during the festival support this program, said Shelly Poire, YMCA director of development and marketing.

"Summer Campers experience character- building, physical fitness, swimming, arts and crafts, and so much more," she said. "Each day campers receive a hot lunch and an afternoon snack. For some, this may be the most nutritious or maybe even the only meal they receive each day.

"YMCA summer campers learn how to be responsible and resourceful, work in groups, solve problems and make decisions that will help them grow as individuals."

The YMCA helps children discover their full potential with a variety of activities -- such as swimming, field trips, arts and crafts, science projects and games.
