Local organizations are organizing a rally intended to get people in their communities to vote.

The Jefferson City NAACP, Jefferson City Faith Voices and Building Community Bridges will host the Rally to Vote at 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of God in Christ, 616 Locust St.

The rally is intended to urge all eligible Jefferson City voters to cast ballots on Election Day, which is Tuesday.

Community members at the rally will share their personal stories about the importance of voting in municipal elections. Attendees will learn where to vote and what to expect on the ballot.

Although it is too late to register for this election, volunteers will be on site with registration forms for future elections, according to a news release.

Nimrod Chapel Jr., president of the Jefferson City NAACP chapter, encouraged voters to let their voices be heard.

"Voting in our local elections for school board and city council makes a difference for your community and your children," he said in the release. "City Council makes policies for police and other city departments to follow and decides how our tax dollars are spent. The school board makes policies regarding public education and equity in classrooms."

Also quoted in the news release, Julie Allen, Jefferson City NAACP elections coordinator and former Missouri elections director, reminded readers the Jefferson City School District spends our tax dollars. She said the district stands to receive a large influx of cash from federal pandemic recovery and infrastructure spending. Board members determine how our children are educated, and whether children receive equal educations.

The rally will include speakers, music and food.

Candidates are welcome, but campaigning will not be allowed at the event.
