The new parks supervisor for Cole County has a familiar last name.

Kevin Bishop's father, Robert, worked at the County Public Works Department for 28 years. His brother, Larry, worked there for 42 years.

Bishop has been with the department for 20 years, starting as a maintenance worker and has worked his way up to where he's at now.

Bishop was moved to this new position about a month ago after Greg Block, who had been taking care of the parks, retired from full-time work last year. He'll be back doing work at the parks on a part-time basis.

"I helped him all of last year to get an idea of what needs to be done," Bishop said. "I've got big shoes to fill with the way he kept things up in the park."

There are three county parks -- County, Thoenen and Brooks.

"You're not just cutting the grass, you're also checking the bathrooms and the trash to see that they're cleaned the way they should be," Bishop said. "We do trash removal on Mondays and Fridays. We want it good for the weekend and after the weekend we want to get caught back up."

Bishop said he hopes to see the parks grow, especially County Park where a nature trail is being put in.

"Greg has kept it at high standard, and it's exciting to see that it stays at that level," Bishop said.

While he may not be able to equal the time his brother worked for the department, Bishop said he and the other members of the family have loved working there.

"Larry started right out of high school, so he had 10 years on me," Bishop said, laughing. "We have a good team, and we know what we have to do so we go out and get the job done."
