Gentry wins playoff, advances to match play at Missouri Amateur

by News Tribune Staff | June 22, 2022 at 12:07 a.m.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- Jefferson City's Alex Gentry had to work hard to make the cut for the 115th annual Missouri Amateur Championship at Bellerive Country Club.

Gentry was one of five players tied at 9-over 153 through Tuesday's second day of stroke play in the Missouri Amateur. A total of 63 players shot 8-over 152 or better, leaving one spot for the final qualifier to advance to the match-play portion of the championship.

In the end, after playing 36 holes Monday and Tuesday, Gentry won the playoff for that 64th and final spot against Columbia's Tommy Boone, Webb City's David Eddy, Battlefield's Ben Tummons and Tyler Comerford of Glen Carbon, Ill.

After opening with a 3-over 75, Gentry shot a 78 in Tuesday's second round. He posted 14 pars to go with two bogeys and two double-bogeys.

Also making the cut for match play was Ashland's Walker Kesterson, who shot a 2-over 74 in his second round to finish tied for 26th with a 4-over 148.

Kesterson won the Missouri Amateur in 2019.

Gentry, the No. 64 seed, will play against top-seeded Brad Nurski of St. Joseph at 8 a.m. today. Nurski, a two-time winner of the Missouri Amateur in 2018 and 2010 and a runner-up in 2019, shot a 7-under 65 on Tuesday to finish atop the leaderboard in stroke play with a 9-under 135.

Kesterson, the No. 31 seed, will play No. 34 seed Tradgon McCrae of Plainville, Ill., in the first round of match play. They tee off at 10:33 a.m. today.

Jefferson City's Archer Schnieders missed the cut for match play by five strokes, shooting a 5-over 77 on Tuesday with one birdie, 13 pars, two bogeys and two double-bogeys. Schnieders tied for 102nd with a 14-over 158.

Jefferson City's Gabe Trowbridge shot an 86 on Tuesday with one birdie, seven pars, six bogeys, three double-bogeys and one triple-bogey. Trowbridge tied for 121st with a 20-over 164 in stroke play.

Jefferson City's Tanner Elder withdrew from the championship in the middle of his second round. He was 5 over through nine holes in his second round after shooting a 3-over 75 on Monday.

Nurski was one of nine golfers to shoot under par through 36 holes of stroke play. Mount Vernon's Presten Richarson, the 2019 Junior Match Play champion, was second behind Nurski with a 7-under 137. They were the only two golfers in the field to break par in each round.

Chesterfield's Maxwell Kreikemeier, the 2020 Missouri Amateur runner-up, earned the No. 3 seed in match play after shooting a 4-under 140 in stroke play.
