Gear up. Binder Park is introducing its first multi-discipline adventure challenge.
The challenge will start with a 2.8-mile run, followed by a 7-mile mountain bike ride through Binder Park's single-track. Participants will finish the challenge by paddling two laps in a kayak around Binder Lake -- about four miles.
The race will take place Saturday. Check-in is 8-9:30 a.m. The race will begin at 10 a.m., and awards will be presented at 3 p.m.
Binder Park is the perfect setting for a race like this.
"The challenge itself is going to be held on soft-surface trails, so we don't have to worry about closing down the streets or having the presence of any kind of officials," said Kevin Schwartz, program manager of outdoor recreation at Jefferson City Parks and Recreation. "It does add a level of safety and a little more adventure to it."
Those participating in the challenge can find route maps on JC Park's website and are encouraged to check out the site and even practice before the challenge. Schwartz said the race will take 2-3 hours to finish.
Hoping to make the adventure challenge an annual event, Schwartz said the expected attendance is difficult to gauge for this first race, but they are anticipating 30-40 participants.
It costs $60 to register for the solo category and $80 for the duo category, and registration will last until right before the race begins. Same-day registration can be paid in cash or check only.
Proceeds from the registration will go to the park's general fund to help with the maintenance of the trails and other park amenities.
