JCPD investigating fatal crash

One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Jefferson City.

According to a news release from the Jefferson City Police Department, officers responded to westbound U.S. 50 at the off-ramp to Missouri 179 just before 5 p.m.

Vehicles driven by David Mueller, 78, of Jefferson City and John Welch, 48, of Jefferson City, were both going west on 50 and were approaching the off-ramp. Mueller was in the right lane and Welch was in the left lane.

Mueller suddenly veered into the left lane and struck Welch, who ran off the left side of the roadway, into the median, and came to a controlled stop.

Mueller then skidded off the right side of the roadway and struck several trees and an embankment.

Mueller and his passenger, Anne Muller, 75, of Jefferson City were extricated and both were taken to a local hospital.

David Mueller, who was not wearing a seat belt, succumbed to his injuries. Anne Mueller, who was wearing a seat belt, was admitted for treatment of moderate injuries. Welch reported no injury and declined medical attention at the scene.

Traffic was restricted on the off-ramp for approximately three hours while the scene was cleared.

The crash is still under investigation by the JCPD Traffic Unit.
