Take some time Saturday to learn a bit of history on the big screen.

Building Community Bridges will be showing "Judas and the Black Messiah" on Saturday at their building, 213 E. Ashley St. Doors open at 3 p.m., and the show starts at 4 p.m.

BCB Executive Director Alicia Edwards said the film is a part of the nonprofit's Black History Month events and gives people the opportunity to learn about a major movement in America -- and in a more accessible way.

"Even if you don't want to pick up a book, anyone can watch a film," Edwards said.

"Judas and the Black Messiah" follows William O'Neal, an FBI informant keeping tabs on Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, a group that challenged police brutality against the African American community.

Edwards hopes viewers can understand the ideas of the time better through the film, including the common struggle against poverty, which points back to the mission of BCB to build bridges of opportunity in the community.

"Everyone has this (struggle) in common, and we can use that struggle to make the community more united," she said.

The event is free, but there will be concessions available with proceeds going to the center.
