Capital City High School gets ready to host Rock Bridge Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021, on the Cavaliers' first-ever Senior Night.

This is one that got away.

"I hope this one stings so bad that we never forget it," Capital City coach Travis Cairer said Tuesday night after the Cavaliers dropped a 1-0 decision in double overtime to the Rock Bridge Bruins in Central Missouri Activities Conference action at Capital City High School.

"To me, it seems like it was one we should have had. We had opportunities, but we didn't play the way we are capable of doing. We didn't play our game."

It was just the fourth time this season the Cavaliers have been shut out. In their other 14 games, the Cavaliers have scored two or more goals.

Cairer didn't think Capital City did a good job of possessing the ball in regulation or in overtime.

"I don't think we ever settled in and were fluid," he said. "There might have been some glimpses of it, but we were never fluid for an extended period all night."

The Bruins scored the game-winner on a breakaway with 7:38 remaining in the second 10-minute overtime.

"Brutal," Cairer said.

Capital City defender Mark Echekwu was down injured near the Cavaliers end line for about a minute before Rock Bridge got the winning goal.

Carier didn't think the game should have been stopped for the injury.

"No," Cairer said. "I mean, no. It happens."

Capital City keeper Cuah Vertuz-Cruz stopped four Rock Bridge shots in the first half, one in the second half and another in the first overtime.

The Capital City offense tallied six shots on goal in regulation, but none in overtime.

Rock Bridge is now 11-8-1 overall, 3-2 in the conference.

Capital City falls to 12-6, 4-2 in the CMAC.

"I hope it stings, I hope it hurts and we come in and do anything and everything we can in districts," Cairer said.

Capital City will wrap up the regular season Thursday at Waynesville. The Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed in Class 3 District 4 Tournament and will face seventh-seeded Pacific in the first round at noon Saturday at the 179 Soccer Park.

Prior to the game, the Cavaliers held their first-ever Senior Night.

"I've been a part of them in the past, but it seemed like it meant a little more because it was our first one," Cairer said. "This group was building toward this season, but it was just a little different because we've never had it before."
