JCPD: Lock vehicle doors to avoid theft

With the annual city wide cleanup taking place the next two weeks, the Jefferson City Police Department is reminding residents to be cautious with their property during this time.

"We often take reports for property that is taken that was not intended for the fall clean up," JCPD spokesman Lt. David Williams said in a news release. "We are also urging citizens to lock their vehicles whether parked on the street or in the driveway as many neighborhoods will experience an excess of visitors."

Williams also said that in the past several days, they have taken reports for thefts from motor vehicles.

"At this time, no reports have been taken for vehicles that were forcefully opened," Williams wrote. "All current thefts have been from unlocked vehicles. Several firearms have been taken during these thefts and we strongly urge securing property out of sight or taking valuables into the residence when possible."
