BizBeat: Chez Monet to open new downtown Jefferson City location

Chez Monet will expand its operations by opening a new location in downtown Jefferson City.

Currently located in the Missouri Capitol, Chez Monet will open a second retail location in the Governor Office Building, at 200 Madison St.

"We were given the opportunity, so we're taking it," Chez Monet owner Joan Fairfax said. "It's going to be beautiful."

Chez Monet will continue to serve cookies, cakes and other pastries, along with sandwiches and salads, at the new location.

While Fairfax wants to open the new location "as soon as possible," she's not sure when she will open due to the novel coronavirus. Chez Monet shut its doors until further notice after the COVID-19 pandemic forced most of the Capitol to close.

"Hopefully shortly after all of this is resolved," Fairfax said.

Chez Monet Patisserie is currently located in the west basement of the Capitol, under the House of Representatives chamber and near the House hearing rooms.

Fairfax also operates a commercial bakery out of her home on Mulberry Street.

The Governor's Office Building location will have a smaller kitchen compared to the Capitol location, Fairfax said. She doesn't see that as an obstacle, though, since she has two other kitchens she can use.

"The dining area is a huge room when you walk into that beautiful (building)," she said.

Fairfax said there will be some renovations to the space, like painting, tiling and flooring.

After first opening Chez Monet in 1991 on East High Street, Fairfax closed it in 2013 so she could operate the bakery portion out of her home.

Fairfax reopened Chez Monet inside the Capitol in 2018.

Gotham Grill was located in the Governor Office Building up until late February. It is set to relocate to 205 E. High St.
