In May, the Missouri Department of Conservation honored the late Clint Trammel in Salem by inducting him into the Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame.
Trammel was the longtime forest manager at Pioneer Forest. He died in 2018 at age 78 after a lifelong passion for his forestry career, according to MDC.
MDC Director Sara Pauley praised Trammel for his “superb management” of Pioneer Forest and for refining the forestry technique known as single-tree selection, which is a type of uneven-aged forest management. Single-tree selection and uneven-aged management had been a common practice prior to World War II, but as even-aged forestry practices gained favor, it was “against the odds” that Trammel and staff at Pioneer Forest “adhered to tradition” and improved the technique, Pauley said.
Trammel was the latest of 44 people who have been inducted into the Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame since 1988.

The organization is seeking nominations for the Master Conservationist Award and the Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame. The deadline is Dec. 9.
The Master Conservationist Award honors living or deceased residents; the Missouri Conservation Hall of Fame recognizes deceased individuals. Those who can be considered for either honor are:
• A citizen who performed an outstanding act or developed an innovative idea or technique that contributed to major progress in conservation in Missouri.
• An employee of MDC, other conservation-related government agencies, universities or organizations that performed an outstanding act or developed an innovative idea or technique that contributed to major progress in conservation in Missouri.
Nominations should include a statement describing the nominee’s accomplishments and a brief biography. A screening committee meets annually to consider nominees; the Conservation Commission conveys final approval.
