Our Opinion: Hats off to road crews

Our hats are off to area road crews for performing another stellar job of snow removal in and around Jefferson City.

When Mother Nature strikes with a winter snowstorm, schools are often canceled, but many local residents still don’t have the luxury of hunkering down with a cup of hot cocoa and a warm fire while watching the snow fall. Life doesn’t stop, even on the weekends. People still need to get to work, stores, etc.

Our city and county public works departments get this. They started pre-treating the roads before the storm hit, and they continued tirelessly throughout the storm, often in long shifts.

“We have a dedicated crew that just do a phenomenal job,” city Public Works Director Britt Smith said on KWOS Radio on Monday morning.

We agree.

We noticed that even neighborhood streets were plowed repeatedly throughout Friday night.

If you’ve lived in and around Jefferson City for any period of time, you might not think much about our snow-removal service. You’re spoiled.

However, if you’re a transplant from some area cities in Mid-Missouri (yes, Columbia, we’re talking about you), you were probably wading through the white stuff trying to tip your snowplow driver.

In an episode of The Simpsons, Homer Simpson received a key to the city for his community service of being the “Plow King.”

Road crews will tell you the reality is often the opposite.

Plowing snow is one of those thankless jobs in which you can only hope to minimize complaints by doing your job well. You’re still going to hear: “Why didn’t you plow my street sooner, better, or in a way that didn’t push snow into my driveway? And can’t you do something about the sidewalks?!”

So we would like to take this opportunity to thank the road-cleaning crews for contributing to our safe travels, particularly during snowstorms like the one we had this past weekend.
