3 candidates compete for 2 Chamois aldermen seats

Three candidates are running for two Chamois aldermen seats up for grabs in the April 2 municipal election.

Two incumbents, Dema Schnauss and Martin Gerloff, and newcomer Kenny Rost filed before the Jan. 15 deadline. Gerloff is a recent appointment to the Board of Aldermen, having been in the position for two months.

The deadline to register to vote in the election is March 6.

Schnauss has served as alderwoman since 2015, having grown up in Chamois and returning to the area once she retired.

"I just want to see improvements on our town and so far that's been happening," Schnauss said. "I'm very excited about the council we have now, and I'm hoping it will continue to progress into more things."

During her time as alderwoman, Schnauss said, she has helped form several ordinances, including a nuisance ordinance. One of the issues facing the town now is enforcing ordinances, she added, as Chamois lost its law enforcement around two years ago. The city is considering putting liens against properties as a solution, she said.

Schnauss said another focus is improving roads. She would also like to continue working to create a community senior center to be of service to the many retirees in the community.

Gerloff stepped into his current alderman role two months ago after the resignation of Jeff Brown. After living in the area most of his life, he said, he wants to "help make the town better."

In his brief time as an alderman, Gerloff said, Chamois has worked to improve its water system. There are several parts of town he wants to make a priority, he added.

"Definitely the streets, sidewalks," he said. "Some of the drainage, you know, the storm drains, stuff like that, needs improvements. I know the wells need to be updated."

Gerloff, an employee of a row crop farm who raises cattle separately, said Chamois has been working on grant applications to help fund road improvement efforts.

Kenny Rost, who has lived in Chamois for five years after growing up in the area, said Chamois has several areas that need improvement, including the water system.

"I haven't seen anything get done to do any maintenance or upgrades on the water system, pumps or anything else," Rost said. "And I think that if I can get on I can kind of help push a little to get some more stuff done."

On top of the water system upgrades, he said, the city's sidewalks need work and many properties are falling apart that need to be rebuilt or torn down.

Rost, who works at MFA Exchange in Chamois, said he wants to focus on increasing the town's revenue. He's not sure how to accomplish it, he added, but the city needs to add residents and bring in more affordable housing.
