Lincoln track wins team titles at William Jewell

LIBERTY - The Lincoln men's and women's track and field teams combined to win 14 events last Saturday, sweeping the team titles at the Darrel Gourley Open hosted by William Jewell.

The Lincoln women finished with 168 points, well ahead of MidAmerica Nazarene, which took second place with 89 points. The Lincoln men posted 119 points, while Columbia College was second with 92.5 points.

Lincoln swept men's and women's event titles in the long jump, 400-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay.

Rusheda Blake won the women's long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 2.25 inches, while Ryan Brown jumped 24-5.75 to win the men's long jump.

Kissi-Ann Brown posted a winning time of 55.49 seconds in the women's 400. Mohammed Kouyate clocked a time of 48.41 seconds to win the men's 400.

Rene Medley took first in the women's 100 with a time of 11.33 seconds, and Javan Gray won with a time of 10.40 seconds in the men's 100.

Brown also placed first in the women's 400 hurdles, finishing with a time of 1:02.01. Coy Spence won the men's 400 hurdles with a time of 53.91 seconds.

In the 4x400, Kamoy Fagan, Shiana Vandenburg, Malalia Siafa-Bangura and Melissa Tyme won the women's relay with a time of 4:01.59. In the men's relay, Tyrese Halls, Kouyate, Raymone Campbell and Spence finished first with a time of 3:16.46.

Medley, whose time in the 100 is the fastest this season in NCAA Division II, was named the MIAA women's track athlete of the week Tuesday for the second consecutive week. She was also honored as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association women's track and field national athlete of the week.

The Lincoln women added three other wins Saturday. Renea Ambersley clocked a winning time of 24.41 seconds in the 200, while Vivian Akunna first first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.76 seconds.

Blake, Segale Brown, Jamika Hypolite and Siafa-Bangura won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 47.96 seconds.

For the Lincoln men, Kizan David won the triple jump with a distance of 48-2.5.

Lincoln will compete in two meets this weekend. The Blue Tigers will be in the Kansas Relays, which are today through Saturday, and the Dewey Allgood Invitational at Missouri S&T, which is Friday and Saturday.

Benedictine senior Scott Brannan was the lone area athlete last Saturday to win an event at the Darrel Gourley Open.

Brannan (School of the Osage High School) finished first in the men's shot put, posting a winning throw of 51 feet, 1 inch. He also placed eighth in the discus (123-1) and 16th in the hammer throw (116-2).

Four area athletes competed in the men's 800-meter run. Central Methodist junior Elliot Knernschield (Helias High School) led the way with a 10th-place finish in 2:01.92. William Woods sophomore Hunter Carpenter (California High School) placed 12th (2:02.21), Columbia College freshman Harrison Frank (Russellville High School) was 18th (2:04.81) and Central Methodist junior Ryan Bennett (Eldon High School) finished 40th (2:18.55).

Knernschield and Bennett also helped Central Methodist's men's 4x400-meter relay to a ninth-place finish in a time of 3:35.94.

In the men's 4x800-meter relay, Missouri Baptist junior Brian Jordan (School of the Osage High School) helped the Spartans to a fourth-place finish in a time of 8:45.46. Frank helped the Cougars to a sixth-place finish (9:02.36), while Carpenter led William Woods 'A' relay team to an eighth-place finish (9:06.84). Junior Charlie Schattgen (New Bloomfield High School) and freshman Cole Brenneke (Blair Oaks High School) ran on William Woods 'B' relay, which took ninth in the 4x800 (9:23.71).

In the men's 5,000-meter run, Schattgen finished 17th in 16:58.44, while Central Methodist junior Joe Bruemmer (Helias High School) was 19th in 17:18.48. Jordan also took 25th place in 18:39.45.

Carpenter came in 12th place in the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:16.90, while junior teammate Matt Fringer (Russellville High School) finished 34th in 4:40.14.

In addition to Brannan's performance in the men's discus, Brenneke finished 23rd in the event with a throw of 104-10 and Fontbonne sophomore Greih Murray (Blair Oaks High School) took 24th at 102-7. Murray also finished 19th in the javelin (91-4), 2oth in the hammer throw (105-8) and 23rd in the shot put (33-5.25).

On the women's side, Central Methodist freshman Jasmine Evers (Eugene High School) had the top finish among area athletes, finishing fourth in the discus with a throw of 121-3.

Evers also placed 12th in the shot put (35-8) and 17th in the hammer throw (121-9).

Also competing in the hammer throw were William Woods senior Cassidy Roling (Helias High School), who finished ninth (139-2); Benedictine senior Veronica Wiebold (Blair Oaks High School), who placed 13th (125-2); and Missouri Baptist junior Andrea Hughes (Jefferson City High School), who was 19th (114-11).

In the discus, Hughes finished seventh at 116-2, followed by Wiebold in eighth at 112-9. Roling placed 24th with a throw of 91-11.

Columbia College freshman Tessa Edgar (Versailles High School) came in sixth place in the women's javelin with a throw of 98-0. She also finished 28th in the 100-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 13.63 seconds.

William Jewell junior Lexie Stull (Jefferson City High School) took eighth place in the women's long jump with a leap of 15-11.75. She also finished 10th in the triple jump (34-5.5) and 31st in the 200-meter dash preliminaries (29.13 seconds).

The William Woods women had two entries in the 4x800. The 'A' team, which included sophomore Ryan Esterline (Jefferson City High School) and freshman Alicia Engelbrecht (Helias High School), took third place in 11:06.14. The 'B' team, while included sophomores Shaley Eichholz (Eugene High School) and Harley Nale (Linn High School), placed fifth in 11:47.01.

In the women's 1,500, Engelbrecht finished 12th with a time of 5:21.88, while Esterline was 14th in 5:28.48. William Woods freshman Elizabeth Luebbert (South Callaway High School) placed 30th in 5:52.59.

Engelbrecht also finished 19th in the 800 with a time of 2:37.26, while Columbia College freshman Halie Moeller (Fatima High School) was 28th in 2:48.89. Moeller also placed 29th in the 100 preliminaries in 13.72 seconds.

William Woods sophomore Naomi Kerkula (Jefferson City High School) competed in three events for the Owls. She helped the 4x100-meter relay to a sixth-place finish in 54.16 seconds. In individual events, Kerkula was 15th in the 100 preliminaries (12.74 seconds) and 20th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:16.59).
