Local community leaders are known to have hectic schedules, but many of them will relax and step out of their comfort zones next week for the third annual CelebARTy Art Auction.

Hosted by Capital Arts, the event is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Avenue HQ, 621 E. Capitol Ave. in Jefferson City, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. It includes a cocktail hour with cash bar, dinner and the live art auction.

Eighteen local "celebrities" created pieces of art, with the help of artists, for the event. Local celebrities this year include Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin; Jake Vogel, president of Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company; Phil Stiles, program manager of special events with the Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department; and Amber Brondel, United Way marketing and communications manager.

Local celebrities can select the art medium they want to use - ranging from paintings and mixed media to sculptures and pottery - and what they want to create. Past examples include a photograph printed on acrylic of the Missouri River bridge at night, a painting of an American flag at half staff, a fused glass craftwork shaped in a wreath and handmade ceramic pieces.

The event not only raises art awareness but also allows the local celebrities to take a break from their busy schedules and try something new.

"We wanted to take people in the community that we consider celebrities that may have never done art before and give them something new," Capital Arts Executive Director Leann Porrello said. "But (if) other people in the community see, 'If these people can step out of their comfort zone, do a piece of art and really enjoy it,' maybe it will encourage others in the community to try something they're not used to either."

Tickets cost $35 each or $280 for a table of eight.

The proceeds go toward expanding art programs, classes and fundraisers through Capital Arts.

To purchase tickets, call 573-635-8355 or visit Capital Arts, 1203 Missouri Blvd.
