Two late goals lead Helias soccer past Hannibal

With a little more than six minutes remaining Tuesday, the Helias Lady Crusaders were beating the Hannibal Lady Pirates everywhere except where it counted the most - the scoreboard.

Helias had outshot Hannibal by a 24-5 count, but the Lady Pirates scored with 6:39 on the clock to take a 3-2 lead against the Lady Crusaders at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

"We were doing everything I asked, we were attacking with speed and with pace," Helias coach Jay Hebenheimer said. "We just couldn't finish."

But that changed in the final four minutes as the Lady Crusaders scored twice to rally for a 4-3 victory.

"It was a good team win, we faced some adversity and answered it," Hebenheimer said.

Olivia Farrow tied it with a little less than four minutes to play. The Lady Crusaders had a corner kick and took it outside. Farrow got control of the ball outside the box and lined a shot at the net, which skipped off the hands of a leaping Hannibal keeper into the net.

"We have to take shots when we can, we banged one from the outside and it found the net," Hebenheimer said.

Helias got the game-winner with 2:47 remaining. Hannah Crane served a long pass to the far corner of the Hannibal net where Reese Hamilton was waiting to head it in for the score.

The Lady Crusaders scored the lone goal of the first half when with 26:51 on the clock, Morgan Yanskey put back a rebound for a score.

Hannibal tied it with 23 minutes to play in the second half on a goal by Haley Ballinger. It was the Lady Pirates' second shot on goal in the game.

Helias answered to regain the lead about four minutes later when Hamilton scored off an assist by Hannah Loethen. It was the Lady Crusaders' 10th total shot of the half.

"The finish was not there for us today, but their keeper did a very good job of keeping the ball out of the net," Hebenheimer said.

Hannibal (4-2) tied the game with 10:47 remaining on a goal by Shelby Stine, then took a 3-2 lead with 6:39 to play on a score by Kaylee Falconer.

Helias (5-6) is back in action Friday at Union.
