Burglary, stalking, terror threats among grand jury indictments

The Cole County Grand Jury recently handed down several indictments, finding there was enough evidence to send the cases to the circuit courts for possible trial.

Among those indicted were three California residents and one Jefferson City resident in connection with business burglaries in August.

Danielle Rice, 22, Travis Webb, 24, and David Rice, 20, all of California, and Hannah Means, 20, of Jefferson City, are each charged with one count of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree burglary.

The burglaries occurred at Rainbow Market on Rainbow Drive and at Pass-N-Gas on Route C in Russellville, according to Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statements. Both stores had glass doors broken and several items taken.

A few hours after the burglaries, Moniteau County sheriff's deputies responded to a shots-fired call at a residence on Walker Road in California.

Four adults connected to the Cole County burglaries were at this residence and were taken into custody. A juvenile also was taken into custody and later turned over to juvenile authorities.

During a search of the residence, deputies recovered several cartons of cigarettes, pocket knives and cigars taken in the burglaries.

The four adults were questioned and admitted to being involved in the burglaries, according to the probable cause statement. They told investigators they had planned the crimes a few days before carrying them out. Danielle Rice drove the vehicle the group rode in to the burglaries while Webb, David Rice and Means broke into the businesses, using a car jack handle to break the glass doors. David Rice also said he had a loaded firearm in his pocket when they committed the crimes, investigators said.

Also indicted was a Jefferson City man charged in connection with a stalking case from July and taken into custody in August by the Moniteau County Sheriff's Department.

John Harlow, 31, was charged with first-degree stalking July 25.

The Moniteau County Sheriff's Office received information from the Jefferson City Police Department on a subject with an outstanding Cole County felony warrant. The information said Harlow was possibly staying at a residence in Moniteau County and had made threats against law enforcement. Deputies went to the residence located on Missouri 87, where they took Harlow into custody.

Also indicted was a Jefferson City man charged after a chase with authorities in August.

Gregory Hite Jr., 28, is charged with felony resisting a lawful stop and two misdemeanor charges of DWI and careless and imprudent driving.

Hite allegedly failed to stop for a flashing red light at Madison and East High streets, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

An officer saw this and activated his lights for Hite to stop, but he accelerated through the 200 block of East High and failed to stop.

Hite continued on East High, reaching speeds of more than 80 mph, and failed to stop at East High and Lafayette streets.

He finally lost control and crashed in the 900 block of East High.

Hite got out of this vehicle and got into a struggle with police officers before he was taken into custody.

At the Cole County Jail, he was given a Breathalyzer test and was found to be intoxicated.

Also indicted was a man from Salem charged with making a terroristic threat aimed at a Jefferson City business.

Court documents show Logan Barton, 26, is accused of calling the business and saying he would "shoot the place up."

Barton allegedly called Freddy's Frozen Custard on Missouri Boulevard in September to talk with an employee with whom he had an ongoing ex-parte issue, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

Barton talked with the store manager and, with the officers still at the restaurant, he told the manager: "If you think what you're doing will stop me, you're wrong. I'm gonna come up there and shoot the place up."

At the time of this incident, Barton was on probation for possession of a controlled substance and burglary.
