KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City Zoo has hatched its first king penguin and is hand-feeding the chick.
The Kansas City Star reports that zoo officials announced the chick's arrival Monday. It hatched Nov. 8 from a surplus egg that the Saint Louis Zoo provided. Kansas City Zoo staff members are rearing the chick because they don't believe it would be adopted by the other birds. At just under two weeks old, the chick weighs about 280 grams. It will grow to be about 33 pounds and as tall as a yardstick. Kings are the second largest penguins after emperors.
Eventually, it will live with the 15 adult king penguins in the zoo's $15 million Helzberg Penguin Plaza, which opened in 2013.
