CAMDENTON, Mo. - Evan Winder's individual title at 106 pounds Saturday highlighted Helias' performance in the Class 3 District 3 Wrestling Tournament.
Winder, a sophomore, went 4-0 in winning the title. After winning his first two matches by fall, Winder won 4-3 in the semifinals before taking a 3-2 decision from Oscar Ortiz of McDonald County in the title match.
"It was good for Evan to have a couple of close matches," Helias coach Bryant Gaines said. "That will help him down the road."
Winder is one of five state qualifiers for the Crusaders.
"It was a very good couple of days for us," Gaines said. "Five qualifiers is the most we've had for a few years."
The consolation semifinals were a key round for Helias as the Crusaders won four of their five "win or go home" matches.
"The kids did great in that round," Gaines said.
The other four Helias qualifiers finished fourth in the district - Randy Salaz at 120, Jackson Careaga at 132, Dustin Luebbert at 138 and Nick Gaines at 145.
Helias finished seventh in the final team standings with 99.5 points. Neosho was first with 251.5, followed by Willard (168.5) and Carthage (143.5) in the 15-team event.
The Class 3 state tournament begins at 5 p.m. Thursday at Mizzou Arena.
