Your Opinion: Problem is assimilation, not immigration

Dear Editor:

The issue, the problem, is not immigration, it's the lack of desire to assimilate into our culture, the United States of America. Cindy Collins letter to the editor Dec. 12 seems to infer that if not for Native Americans and tree bark we would not have aspirin. At one point in our history immigration was necessary, not just needed. In today's environment and world, it is not. I don't see immigrants coming to be Americans. Instead I see them coming only to take advantage of America's generosity.

We don't need immigration to have music, medicine or Christmas trees. We need immigrants that will embrace the laws, freedoms and traditions of this country. There is no foul or harm in celebrating your heritage and former cultural traditions. But in the end, you need to be, you are Americans!

There's no such thing as an Irish American or an African-American. There's only Americans of Irish descent and Americans of African descent. We are a melting pot, but damn it, you must melt!
