Your Opinion: Response to 'Ship of State'

Dear Editor:

Some unsolicited advice for Mr. Clayton Hill, after reading his attempt at writing parable (published Sept. 18) entitled "Ship of State" extolling Republican politics and Donald Trump; Don't give up your day job.

Mr. Hill makes two serious points that beg for rebuttal; First, he asserts that the United States must "turn right to correct our direction to the Constitution," and second, he asserts that Donald Trump is "the able seaman that can steer the "ship of state" to do that.

First, to the "right" and their "adherence" to our Constitution. The Republicans certainly do beat the drum "follow and honor the Constitution." The problem is they don't.

Voter ID laws. Voting is the bedrock of our constitutional republic. These laws disenfranchise minority voters who generally vote Democratic. Make no mistake; these laws have nothing to do with stopping voter fraud.

TRAP laws (Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Providers). These laws attempt to prevent access to abortion by women seeking services. They infringe upon the constitutional rights of women. Additionally, they fly in the face of Supreme Court decisions, doubly spitting on the Constitution.

Laws restricting access to marriage by the LGBTQ community. These deny the pursuit of happiness, (not in the Constitution, but in the Declaration of Independence).

The act of enacting law serving the Christian faith spits on the Bill of Rights.

When Ted Cruz states "God is not done with America yet," he is spitting on the Constitution. When Tom Delay says "the Constitution was written by God," he is spitting on the Constitution and insults our founders.

So, when Republicans beat the drum "follow the Constitution," they are massive hypocrites.

As to the fitness of Mr. Donald Trump to lead this nation as president, one quote by Mr. Trump should be all you need to know; shortly after Trump announced that "Muslims should be denied entry to the United States," it was pointed out to him this would be unconstitutional. His response? "I don't care."

Without the time nor space to list failings point by point, Trump has demonstrated about as much familiarity with the U.S. Constitution as he has with government, which is to say, none. He has captivated a share of the Tea Party with a style of politics utterly alien to the Constitution.
