Careless disposal of smoking materials led to a Friday afternoon fire that heavily damaged a Jefferson City home.

According to fire department reports, a neighbor called 911 and fire crews were sent at 12:49 p.m. to the home in the 1500 block of Edmonds Street.

The first fire company arrived and reported heavy smoke coming from the roof and eaves of the house. Fire crews immediately entered the residence and extinguished the fire on the first floor and in the attic. The fire was under control within 15 minutes, and firefighters remained on the scene for two hours to complete clean-up operations.

The home sustained fire damage to the living room and attic, and there was smoke damage throughout the structure.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Due to the amount of damage throughout the home, the residents were not able to stay there, and the American Red Cross was called to assist the family with temporary shelter and emergency provisions.
