BizBeat: Wine stops flowing at 2 Jefferson City businesses

Jefferson City bade goodbye to two locally owned businesses of the more inebriating variety at the end of 2015.

Vines and The Twisted Canvas both closed officially at the end of December.

The Twisted Canvas, which was located at 219 E. High St., opened three years ago offering social acrylic painting classes that encouraged customers to bring their own food and drinks or order from J. Pfenny's Sports Grill & Pub next door.

"We're very sad to have to close," said Kim Marquis, who owned and operated The Twisted Canvas with her son, noting the decision to close involved personal reasons. "We as owners of the Twisted Canvas thank everybody so much in the city; they just did so much to support us."

Marquis said people who have unredeemed gift cards to The Twisted Canvas should contact her via private message on The Twisted Canvas's Facebook page with proof of purchase.

She also noted plans to reopen The Twisted Canvas potentially in a new location in the future.

"We are looking into possibly opening up either in the spring or in the fall," Marquis said. "We hope to add possibly some different types of crafts in there, maybe some ceramics or something like that."

Vines, a wine and tapas bar that operated inside Brew House Coffee at 1507 E. McCarty St. after the coffee shop closed for the day, originally opened in November 2014 - a side project for owners Lorie Smith, Jody Bruemmer and Dana Hall-Johnson.

The trio announced the wine bar's closing on the Vines Facebook page: "Although it was a successful year making so many new friends and old ones alike, our schedules will no longer allow up to keep up with our little side venture. Much love to ALL who patronized Vines in our one year of operation; we truly had a blast. To our dedicated staff who are also our family and dearest friends, we couldn't have done it without you."
