Jays take second at Elite 8 Duals

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City wrestling team finished second in the inaugural Elite 8 dual match tournament on Saturday.

The event, hosted by Battle, brought together the top eight teams in the state rankings.

The Jays started out the day with a 60-15 win against Seckman.

Peter Kuster (120), Tanner Irwin (132), Zach Hurley (138), Dennis Barnes (152), Logan Moriarity (170), Rashaun Woods and Jalen Martin (195) all won by fall.

Two Jays took decisions - Christian Mayberry (126) won 1-0 in overtime and Jacob Brune (160) won 8-4.

Winning by forfeit were Gavin Dewitt (145) and Tekoah Sage (220).

Mekhi Burnley (285) lost 2-1, Garrett Butel (106) lost by fall and Sam Martin (113) lost by fall.

Jefferson City then notched a 35-28 win against Holt in the semifinals.

Winning by fall were Moriarity and Burnley.

Hurley won 8-5, Dewitt won 3-1, Woods won 7-3, Jalen Martin won by technical fall and Sage won 4-1. Mayberry won by forfeit.

Brune lost 1-0, Kuster lost 6-0 and Irwin lost 12-3. Barnes, Butel and Sam Martin all lost by fall.

In the championship match, Jefferson City dropped a 31-28 decision to Park Hill.

Gaining bonus points for the Jays were Woods, who won by fall, and Brune, who won by forfeit.

Winning decisions were Hurley (7-2), Jalen Martin (7-3), Burnley (10-2), Kuster (3-0) and Irwin (8-4).

Barnes lost 11-3, Moriarity lost 4-3, Sage lost 3-2 and Mayberry lost 1-0.

Losing by fall were Dewitt, Butel and Sam Martin.

The Jays are now off until Friday and Saturday when they compete in Class 4 districts at Nixa.
