After moving to Jefferson City, a local art teacher decided to paint it.

Michelle Livek said she created the painting from her love of Jefferson City. The painting, a silhouette of the city's skyline, is only one project Livek teaches others how to create in workshops she offers at antiques-and-more store Shop Girl, which opened in June on Boonville Road.

Livek came up with the idea for the painting after she moved to Jefferson City from the Lake of the Ozarks last October.

"I thought it would be a cool way to celebrate home and hopefully show I like being in Jefferson City. And it has a beautiful skyline, and the paintings show it in a more interesting way," Livek said

Livek first did a tricolor, blended background with acrylic paint. Next she did a pattern saturation, using lots of stencils and similar color pallets on top of the background.

She then used a negative stencil of the Jefferson City skyline, making the buildings look more three-dimensional.

Livek then dry-brushed a reflection of the buildings, adding detail to make the buildings look more realistic. After adding the details, she said, she added the latitude and longitude of the Capitol on the painting.

Finally, she used stained glass spray paint, which stays translucent, with stencils over the whole painting. Livek said the stained glass spray paint adds a little interest to the painting.

"I use either warm or cold analogous colors on the color wheel to give the illusion of either sunrise or sunset," she said

In her workshops, Livek lets the participant choose how the painting looks based on the options she gives, and she's there to guide them in the step-by-step process.

"I really want my workshops to be motivating to make the participants continue making, and they are meant to be a meaningful encounter that transcends the typical 'how to paint,'" Livek said. "It's more about embracing an authentic, creative experience."
