Missouri Boulevard is a dangerous street for cars and for pedestrians attempting to cross the street. It can be a harrowing experience.
In Scott Bledsoe’s letter he highlighted the lack of pedestrian crossings. I agree — there is no safe way to cross. I travel on Missouri Boulevard numerous times a day. Almost daily I see a pedestrian attempting to cross, zigging and zagging between traffic. The city/state (Missouri Boulevard is a shared responsibility between the MoDOT and the city) should assure the safety of all citizens and create safe crossings.
Every year new businesses open changing the traffic patterns. Panera’s will soon be opening a drive through restaurant at the corner of Missouri Boulevard and Heisinger/Hyde Park. This particular intersection poses several problems. There is a rise (hill) in Missouri Boulevard that creates a blind spot for people turning either left off of Missouri Boulevard or turning either way off of Heisinger.
Cars wanting to turn left onto Heisinger from Missouri Boulevard often back up in the left turn lane blocking cars wanting to turn left into businesses on the north side of the street. Cars on Heisinger become backed up wanting to turn right or left onto Missouri Boulevard often creating a wait time of three to four minutes to turn. Frustration is expressed by motorists making dangerous turns or driving through the Alexandro’s parking lot.
Making matters worse, there is a bus stop at this intersection, with no crosswalk or light, so pedestrians trying to cross Missouri Boulevard at this intersection add a complication to the already unsafe automobile issues. This intersection needs a traffic light, and soon, before Panera’s opens.
Everyone who drives Missouri Boulevard has seen near misses, fender benders or scared mothers crossing with baby stroller and a toddler. It’s time for action on this street.
