Toddler hit by police car back home

The 1-year-old Jefferson City boy hit by a Jefferson City police vehicle last Wednesday was released from University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia and is recovering at home.

Highway Patrol spokesman Cpl. Scott White said the child's injuries were considered moderate.

The patrol has been investigating the incident, since it involved a Jefferson City police officer. An internal investigation by the police department into the incident is also being conducted.

White said that while the accident reconstruction is ongoing, they do not believe there will be criminal charges filed in this case.

"The child was outside the home for an extended period of time," White said. "It appears that the child simply slipped out an unlocked rear door of the house and made his way to the street fairly quickly before being struck."

White said it appeared the child just ran from behind a parked van into East McCarty Street, near Cherry Street, and was struck by the police car.
