BizBeat: FM 104.1 retunes format

Cumulus Media retuned its approach to Jefferson City's FM 104.1 radio station last week.

The radio broadcasting company changed the KZJF station's format Monday from CBS Sports to popular music from the late 1960s to early 1980s. Previously "104.1 The Fan," Cumulus has rebranded the station "Z104.1, Jefferson City's Classic Hits."

"We just felt we could serve a bigger audience. It's a format that's friendly for listening at the office, much more so than, say, a sports format," said Phil Lewis, Cumulus market manager for Jefferson City and Columbia. "I think it's going to get a lot of traction, and I think a lot of people will enjoy it here."

The station will continue broadcasting Kansas City Royals games, but will drop all other sports coverage. Cumulus also is the local Kansas City Chiefs affiliate on 100.1.

Afternoon sports show "The Closers," formerly broadcast on 104.1, will now be broadcast on AM 1240 (KLIK) in Jefferson City and AM 1400 in Columbia. Tim Thomas, who does some air work on FM 101.5 (KPLA), has become the 104.1 morning drive personality.
