The Jefferson City Fire Department responded to a fire Tuesday shortly after noon at 12 Jackson St. at the Dulle-Hamilton Towers. The fire was blamed on an accidental discharge of a cigarette in a trash can and was confined to one apartment on the seventh floor.

An accidental discharge of a cigarette in a trash can may have led to a fire at the Hamilton-Dulle Towers on Tuesday afternoon.

Fire department reports show crews were dispatched to 12 Jackson St. at 12:13 p.m. for an automatic alarm that was sounding in the apartment building.

Before the firefighters got on the scene, a caller to 911 said there was smoke on the seventh and eighth floors.

"When crews arrived they found light smoke on both floors, so they did a search to make sure all occupants of those floors were accounted for," said Fire Department spokesman Jason Turner. "That was a struggle for us because we are dispatched here so many times and people can get complacent when they hear alarms, thinking it's a false alarm."

Turner said the fire was found in one of the apartments on the seventh floor and it was extinguished in a few minutes.

There were no injuries reported.

"It is a nuisance for some people, but the alarm system is designed for early notification to let people know there is an emergency," Turner said. "We should respond appropriately. We're here multiple times throughout the year and people get complacent and that's unfortunate, but whatever it is, even a cooking fire, those type of incidents can turn into something serious. So when in doubt, get out."
