Your Opinion: Redevelopment along "Capitol Mile'

Dear Editor:

Regarding Mr. Williams "Negatives remembered" and former Commissioner Ellinger. Amen. The question now becomes; will Commissioner Bushman be any better?

Finally someone, thank you Mr. Williams, has put forth the issue of a half-empty judicial facility in Cole County that is sucking the taxpayer dry. Save the old jail and sheriff's residence. Use the empty space already available. Don't tear down an historic building and waste more of the taxpayers money.

Instead in 2015 let us push the idea of redevelopment of the "Capitol Mile." The mile between the State Capitol to the historic Missouri State Penitentiary. It could and should be a worldwide tourist destination. Shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, historic mansions, upscale apartments, homes and architecture, bring back the old hotels along Capitol Avenue, the oldest house in Jefferson City, places where Frank James stayed before surrendering, etc. etc. etc. There is so much.

Then we have Main Street. What a loop. This just takes vision and assistance/incentives from every level of government. There are examples everywhere.

Sikeston (www.visitsikeston.com) is a fantastic example of historic home tours right here in Missouri. But we have the Capitol building We have the prison. We are the seat of Missouri government. We have world renown art work within the Capitol building. We have the historic jail and sheriffs residence. We have a Carnegie Library. We need to promote gentrification of the Capitol Mile and keep young professionals and talent in Jefferson City.

I know. How about asking the malefactor of wealth Rex Sinquefield and Marc Ellinger to invest in the Capitol Mile.
