Raytown South held Joplin to single-digit scoring totals in the first and fourth quarters to defeat the Eagles 59-37 on Wednesday at Fleming Fieldhouse in Jefferson City. With the win, Raytown South finished seventh in the Great 8 Classic.
Joplin, which fell 78-39 Monday to Father Tolton and 73-30 Tuesday to Jefferson City, finished the tournament with 106 points, second lowest in event history. St. Francis (Wis.) scored just 105 in the 2008 tournament.
The Cardinals held the Eagles to four first-quarter points on 2-of-12 shooting and entered halftime up eight. That lead quickly became 16, as Raytown South scored the first eight points out of halftime. The lead reached 20 points 2:15 into in the fourth quarter, thanks to a 9-0 Cardinals run. Joplin scored just eight fourth-quarter points.
Savon Witt led all scorers with 19 points, and Jabril Cox chipped in 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Cardinals. Dineji Olaniyan led the Eagles with 16 points and Darrian Guillory scored 10.
Three Raytown South players recorded dunks, including two by Witt. Guillory also had an alley-oop dunk on a pass from Braeden Testerman once the game was well out of reach.
Just 14 fouls were called between the two teams. Raytown South lost to Upper Arlington 65-51 on Monday and Owasso 61-55 on Tuesday.
