Your Opinion: Proposed legislation would aid factory farms

Dear Editor:

Most people I talk to seem to be against large, corporate, factory farms. Thus, I find it interesting that the Missouri House of Representatives is attempting to pass bills that would: Prohibit an individual from voicing concerns about the safety of food from animals raised on factory farms; give preference for public money to counties that do not regulate factory farms, HB 882; protect factory farms from lawsuits resulting from harmful emissions, pollution, and unsafe discharges of waste, HB 955; and eliminate local control of factory farms, HB 999.

Additionally, bills have been proposed that would:

Remove the Dept. of Agriculture from under control of the Governor, HJR 29; exempt "mini circuses" from the Large Carnivore Act, HB 1264; and eliminate the ability to monitor animal welfare issues at commercial dog breeding facilities and factory farms, HB 479.

The Missouri Senate committee voted to pass SB 54 which provides immunity to factory farms against lawsuits for air, water, and waste pollution and proposed a bill that would prohibit the regulation of large factory farms by local county commissions and health boards!

These are the types of issues our politicians do not mention when they are campaigning for your vote. If you are at all concerned about any of these issues, please contact your legislators and voice your opinions on these issues.
