Local artists compete in cancer art competition

Two local artists submitted paintings in the Lilly Oncology on Canvas Art Competition, which honors the journeys individuals face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis.

The artists unveiled their art this week at the Goldschmidt Cancer Center in Jefferson City.

The competition is open to cancer survivors from the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as family members, friends, their health care providers and caregivers. Individuals may submit paintings, photography or other art.

Pat Stafford of Holts Summit submitted a pastel painting titled "With a Little Help from my Friends." It depicts Stafford walking to the edge of a wooded area.

"This is me finally making it to God's light as a survivor," said Stafford, a breast cancer survivor. "It's going from somewhere dark to light."

It depicts the support she had from family, friends and health care providers.

Dennis Holliday also submitted a painting, titled "Footsteps to Peace." It honors Deb Bruenning, Holliday's girlfriend of eight years, who lost a nearly six-year battle with breast cancer.

"I knew this was a way to honor her," Holliday said of his painting.

It depicts a stream that trails off into a blue horizon. In part of the stream, rocks are visible, as well as footprints - Bruenning's footprints. Her name is camouflaged in the sky.

Colleen Parsons, a representative with Lilly Oncology, said Stafford and Holliday are the first competitors from the Mid-Missouri area.

The competition is biennial, and entries are published in a book. Ten pieces of artwork are selected as finalists, and the artists receive cash prizes awarded to foundations of their choice.

Much of the art will go on tour and be displayed at various cancer centers, hospitals and events.
