Your Opinion: Candidates differ on student loans

Dear Editor:

Does Todd Akin understand the process of getting a student loan or Pell grant and paying for college in a family with a limited income? Without these federally guaranteed student loans, thousands of Missourians would not be able to attend college.

Every deserving student should be given the chance to go to college. Without student loans, many students would not be able to get their desired education. If we were to return to a private system of lending, the big banks would decide who gets to go to college. We all know how that would end. Only children of the wealthy would go to college.

That is simply not fair.

I don't see student loans as the enemy. I see them as the chance for many students to pursue their dreams. I believe that in America we should be able to go to college if we want to improve out lives and chances of success.

Todd Akin does not seem to share this view. If he takes Claire McCaskill's Senate seat, needy students will get left behind while only the wealthy get an opportunity for a good education.
