Bill would have governor notify lawmakers of vacancies

Missouri government has more than 900 boards and commissions that use citizens to advise or supervise parts of state operations.

The citizens are appointed to serve for specific periods, and state Sen. Brian Munzlinger wants state law to require the governor to notify lawmakers "at least 30 days before the term ends" when a vacancy is about to occur on each of those boards and commissions.

Many of those appointees are recommended to the governor's office by lawmakers - and they are sponsored by their senator if the appointment to the position requires the Senate's confirmation.
